Izakaya.

Oh how I love Nagoya's izakayas (bar and street food in one). They are communal--meaning the atmosphere is more open and social. They are usually small with local clients from Nagoya. The food is delicious although sometimes strange. Sometimes your boss or your friends will surprise you with what they order. They will order pig tongue or jellyfish or squid and you're not allowed to know what it is until you've eaten it. They are fun because of the energy of the employees' energy and hollering out...and because of the alcohol. The most common drinks in Nagoya are 'biru'(beer) or 'hibaru'(highball). It's easy to get confused when ordering, so you might end up with a small glass, a full liter, or a pitcher--buyer beware!

You may fall down from drinking too much, but don't plan on sitting down. These places are standing room only. It is all about space conservation and customer turnover. The Japanese are efficient, as I am sure you know.
